Construction Dollars Spent
Habitat for Humanity of Texarkana Inc. was founded in April 1986 as a 501c3 organization. Habitat for Humanity Texarkana (HFHT) offers homeowner partners a “hand up – not a hand out” with a 30-year affordable, interest free mortgage. Homeowners must contribute a total of 200-300 hours of “Sweat Equity” before and during the build of their home. This allows the homeowner, HFHT and the community to form a partnership. Contributing to the home build develops a sense of accomplishment and pride for the Homeowner. Homeowners are typically in the 30-60% AMI (Area Median Income) range and not qualified for a conventional mortgage.
In 2016 HFHT volunteers logged over 2,000 hours building one new home and renovating an existing home. Habitat for Humanity – Texarkana has one paid staff as of the second quarter of 2018; relying on faithful board members who contribute generously of their time, talents and resources; not only during our build projects but through the many hours spent in planning, organizing, attending meetings, supporting homeowners and seeking funds to support HFHT mission.
In the past HFHT has averaged one new house build every 18 months; currently one new home is scheduled for Fall 2018. The goal is to build 2 houses in 2019 (spring and fall) and 3 in 2020. HFHT is in the process of getting a critical repair program started in late 2018. This will assist residents with much needed home repairs in the greater Texarkana area. HFHT is funded through local donations and grants from individuals and businesses in the local area. HFHT is a subsidiary of Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI); no funding is received from HFHI.
